ABOUT

The Human Behind The Paws.

by Domenica Robbins

"I have been rescuing things my whole life."

When I was a little girl growing up in an abusive home on Long Island, I walked my neighborhood with a handmade photo book — pictures of shelter dogs and cats, their stories written in my own handwriting — collecting spare change from neighbors to help the animals.

My dog was my whole world back then. She absorbed my tears, slept beside me, and stood between me and the chaos of my childhood. I believe she saved my life.

"Gretchen. She saved me before I knew I needed saving."

I grew up surviving things that had no business being survived. Domestic violence. Abuse in every form. A traumatic brain injury that stole the version of me I had worked so hard to build. I watched the justice system fail my child in ways that still take my breath away. I have been the person on the floor wondering if there was a reason to get back up.

The dogs were always the reason.

"United States Air Force. The first place I learned that showing up matters."

I joined the Air Force, became an EMT, then a trauma RN — because I refused to need anyone. I built a life around showing up for everyone else: as a nurse, a CASA volunteer, a military youth mentor, a mission worker in Mexico, the mom every kid in the neighborhood called when they had nowhere else to go. I once invited thirty grieving teenagers into my home after a friend's suicide because there was nowhere for them to go and no one to hold the space. We sat in a circle and passed a talking pillow until they could breathe again.

"Teenagers. Street corners. Strangers. Juarez. Wherever there was a need, we showed up."

I started making journals when someone I loved was drowning in depression. I wrote a prompt on every page of a blank notebook. It helped so much that friends wanted one. Then strangers. I made them in hospital break rooms between trauma patients. I mailed them to people I had never met. One night I got a call from someone who had stayed up until morning filling one instead of ending their life. They told me the journal saved them.

That's when I understood what I was really building.

"Four months on the floor with Kyra. The journal series was born here."

I once covered my Jeep in chalkboard vinyl and a giant semicolon — and invited strangers to write messages for anyone they'd lost to suicide. That Jeep drove through towns carrying other people's grief so they didn't have to carry it alone.

"A moving memorial. A rolling safe space. Strangers wrote their grief on the side and drove away a little lighter."

Legacy Paws Rescue is what happens when a person who has survived everything — violence, loss, injury, injustice, and starting over at 50 — decides to turn all of it into something that helps. The five acres in Catawba are a sanctuary for animals who were left behind and humans who need to remember what peace feels like. The Magical Mutts product line teaches children kindness, empathy, and self-love through caring for magical dogs that come to life — and quietly teaches dog body language and how to be a responsible, compassionate companion. The journals help people survive the unsurvivable. The quiz matches adopters with the right dog so fewer animals die in shelters.

Every single piece of it came from a wound that became a gift.

I'm not doing this because it's easy. I'm doing this because I know what it means to need someone to show up — and to have no one come. I know what it means to be the dog nobody picked. I know what it means to heal slowly, in a quiet room, with an animal who doesn't need you to explain yourself.

I'm building the place I always needed. And I'm bringing the dogs with me.

If this mission moves you — adopt, foster, donate, volunteer, or shop. Everything you do here keeps something alive that shouldn't have made it — and did anyway.

You Are Not Alone

Some people find this page because they're looking for a dog.

Some find it because they needed somewhere to land.

Either way — you're welcome here.

I built Legacy Paws because I know what it feels like to be in the dark with no one to call. I know what it feels like to need someone to show up and have no one come. I've been that person. More than once.

If you're going through something hard right now — grief, abuse, addiction, loss, loneliness, or something you don't even have a word for yet — reach out. No agenda. No judgment. Just one human who has been through it too.

And if you need somewhere to put it all — I'll send you a journal. Free. No explanation needed. Just email me and tell me where to send it.

You don't have to be okay right now. You just have to still be here.

"I read every email personally."

If you are in crisis right now, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. You deserve immediate support.

STORY

Legacy Paws Rescue was built for the dogs no one else chooses.

The seniors.
The medical cases.
The “too much” dogs.

The ones who just needed someone to see them differently.

MISSION

We don’t just rescue dogs.
We match them with people who won’t give up on them.

REALITY

This isn’t easy work.
It’s messy, exhausting, emotional, and unpredictable.

But it matters.

And every once in a while…
you watch a dog realize they’re finally safe.

And that makes all of it worth it.

SUCCESS STORIES

This is what it's all about.

"She visited once. Then again. She sniffed every corner, read every room. And then she stayed - not because she had to. Because she chose to."

This is what happens when it works.

Trail-Tested. Trail-Ready. Yours.

We don't just rescue dogs — we take them off-road. Every Legacy Paws rescue dog gets trail-tested on our on-site trails. Jeep ride with the doors off. Off-leash assessment. Creek swim. Backpack carry. If they pass, they earn the badge. If they're built for the trail — they're a Jeep Dog.
