HEALING AT BOTH ENDS OF THE LEASH

Someone gave up on you once too. Maybe nobody said it out loud, but you felt it: written off, labeled, decided about before anyone asked what actually happened. I felt that at four years old, before I even had words for it, and the only one who never made me feel that way had four legs and a name: Gretchen.

Not long after, I was going door to door with a book I made myself, collecting money for shelters, because even that small, I already knew something needed saving. That never stopped. I spent years in addiction nursing and mission work, and of course, saving animals along the way, before I ever founded a rescue, and it taught me the same thing Gretchen already had: behavior is never the whole story, it's just what's left after nobody asked.

I see myself in every dog written off as too much, and in every person standing beside that dog, carrying the same label. Legacy Paws Rescue is a veteran-owned 501(c)(3) sanctuary on five acres in Catawba, NC, built on the belief that healing has to happen at both ends of the leash, or it doesn't really happen at all. I'm still learning as I go. But I know this much: it's going to take a community, and I'm building one.

"People ask me all the time why I started Legacy Paws. The easy answer is because I love dogs. But that isn't the truth."

We need foster homes. This is the honest ask.

IMG_4940.heic

Here's the truth: we can only take the next dog when there's a safe place to land. Fosters are that place. Without them, the doors stay closed and a dog who could've made it doesn't get the chance.

And I know what you're thinking, because almost everyone thinks it. I don't know if I'm cut out for this.

You don't have to know. That's our job.

"Rescue is where we begin. Understanding is where we're trying to go."

Start with the quiz. It's the front door to all of this.

Whatever brought you here, this is where it begins. The quiz does three things, depending on what you need.

You want to foster. We're not screening you to weed you out. We're learning you. Your lifestyle, what your days actually look like, what you love, what you can handle and what you can't. Then we match you with a dog that fits the life you already have.

You want to adopt. Same thing. Nobody gets handed "the next dog on the list," because that's how it goes wrong, for you and for the dog. We learn you first, then we find the one that actually fits.

You already have a dog and something's not working. Tell us what's happening. The chewing, the pulling, the fear, the thing nobody warned you about. We'll tell you why it's happening, the psychology underneath it, and how to fix it. No judgment. A lot of dogs get surrendered over things that were never that hard to solve once someone explained them. We'd rather help you keep yours.

Five minutes. No pressure. It just helps us get it right.

Most dog problems don't start with bad behavior—they start with missed communication. Download the FREE Legacy Paws Dog Parent Guide and learn how to understand your dog's body language, health, fears, and needs before problems begin.

This is a chaotic, love-filled, poop-scooping kind of place.
